Beyond the Basics: Tricky Sources, Smart Citations CIKS

This seminar is designed for international students and serves as the English version of the previously held Czech seminar, “Za hranice základů citování,” focusing on referencing sources that often pose difficulties for students.

Participants will gain not only concrete examples but also a conceptual understanding of how to navigate “non-traditional sources”. We will demonstrate how to avoid getting lost in formalities and how to quickly recognise which type of reference to use. We will cover:

• Artificial Intelligence – how to reference AI outputs and what to be cautious about.
• Software – when and why it should be cited.
• Websites that are more than ‘just websites’ – how to reference dynamic pages or datasets. Social media and multimedia – posts and profiles, podcasts, or YouTube videos.
• Law and regulations – e-government resources: when to treat them as documents and when as legislation.
• Personal communication – should we cite interviews, e-mails, or text messages?
• Internal documents – is it possible to reference a company intranet or internal regulations?
