Miroslav Kubát, Professor Emeritus, University of Miami
Machine learning (ML) ranks among the most popular fields of computer science. Apart
from “learning to recognize,” its other subdisciplines involve unsupervised learning,
temporal learning, reinforcement learning, induction of HMMs, and some other areas.
The talk briefly reminds the audience of ML’s history and then touches on some of the
speaker’s own contributions: induction in time-varying domains, learning from
imbalanced training sets, some pioneering work in ML applications, and books that were
perhaps influential.
