In our modern knowledge-based societies, young people who do not complete upper secondary education face more disadvantage than ever before. Early school leaving is of great concern in Iceland as around 35% have not completed upper secondary school at the age of 23. The paper presents research on the process leading to dropout and the often ignored diversity of early school levers and reasons for their dropout. The results are based on ongoing longitudinal research using diverse data material: A self-report questionnaire administered in all upper secondary schools in Iceland, registered data on educational trajectories, and standardized tests on academic achievement. The findings will be assessed in context of the characteristics of the Icelandic education system and prevention intervention efforts.
