Open science/open data: what are the implications for the world at large?
The modern academic enterprise is an international phenomenon. Every day significant new research results are created, leading to new ways of understanding the world. Most of the research behind these advances is tucked away behind many walls, including hyper expensive journals, undiscoverable data and an academic industry dependent on financial gain. How can we expect to properly educate our society if they can’t even get access to the information behind the scientific enterprise? This issue has been a key driver in developments around the world in the last decade, leading to new governmental policies and funding requirements. This talk will take a look at the current state of open science and open data, beginning with a historical look back at how we got here, and where we might go in the future. We will examine several key efforts currently underway, and what we can learn from these processes.

David Minor:
He is the Director of the Research Data Curation Program in the UC San Diego Library. In this role he helps define and lead work needed for the contemporary and long-term management of digital resources. His position includes significant interaction with stakeholders on the UC San Diego campus, throughout the UC System, and several international initiatives. His program also includes management of Chronopolis, a national-scale digital preservation network.
